Johnny & Hurricanes

Just read today that Johnny Paris (real name John M Pocisk) died on 1 may 2006 at the age of 66 years.
Another of my heroes is gone.

Johnny Paris is the founder of Johnny ah Hurricanes. They made a lot of terrific instrumentals end 50's and early 60's.
Famous are eg Down yonder, Red river rock, Rocking goose and Sandstorm.
Splendid sax playing on their r'n'roll records. One really can't sit still !

A few years ago I digitalized some of their hits and now I will share them here with you.

It's 78MB ripped at 160Kbits, but my source is vinyl ! I've included some scans.

I'm sure you can get their hits still everywhere in music stores in CD quality but I certainly will like this more. Major tickles have been removed by me but there are some crackles left. To me that gives the 'right' oldies sound !

Please look at the comments : this will not be uploaded again !!!

Hello Jean.
Sad to hear this news, but a lot of old Fav's of us are gone or will go in the near future.
We also are becoming older each year.

Must have a 3 /4 LP's of them .
But thanks for the digital versions.

Ronald.

Incredible! Thanks for this - not very known or available in the US. We're getting older each year? Are you sure about that, I'd better check....

Dear Jean Dupree.

I am Sonja Reuter, the executrix of John Pocisk's estate, which includes all of his property and intellectual property rights. I noticed that you are using Johnny and the Hurricanes® on your website and even uploaded the copyrighted material at rapidshare.de.
The first rule on rapid share for uploading on their site states: No files that are not allowed to be shared (no illegal, pornography or COPYRIGHTED! files)

Johnny Paris ® and Johnny and the Hurricanes® are copyrighted and registered trademarks, and the their songs are copyrighted too. The use of these without written authorization and compensation is strictly forbidden in accordance with US and International trademark and copyright laws.

This is to notify you to immediately cease and desist the unauthorized use of these trademarks. Failure to do so will result in legal action. We contacted already rapidshare.de about this matter.

Sincerely,

Sonja Reuter (widow of Johnny Paris/John Pocisk)

Dear Sonja,
by this I pay you my respect.

Sincerely,
Jean Dupree.

Thanks Jean, I am glad you understand. John is dead and we all miss him, me the most, as I was with him for the last 18 years of his life, he was not a perfect man (who is!?) but a wonderful husband nevertheless, besides being a icon of Rock 'n Roll. But with his passing his music is still under copyright law and that will not change for the next 40 years either. I am glad you respect with this the rights of a dead man, too many people try to take advantage of his passing, these things go as far as even making up totally bogus stories about his cause of death, he never had cancer or leukaemia, even the autopsy reports could find no evidence of cancer, yet some UK and Australian papers printed that stuff without research. I guess they figure when you are dead they can stomp all over you no matter what...

Thanks,

Sonja (John's widow)

For all the people that would like to write a note about the time they remembered with Johnny Paris, memories pertaining to the music of Johnny and the Hurricanes or a Johnny and the Hurricanes concert, or if you would just like to read what others entered in the book and to view the photo gallery, please go to

I SERVED IN VIET NAM IN 1966-67 WITH A JOHN POCISK WHO CLAIMED TO BE JOHNNY OF JOHNNY AND THE HURRICANES. HE FORMED A BAND MADE UP FROM MARINES AND PLAYED AT THE DANANG HOTEL FOR ALL THE GENERALS AND ADMIRALS WHILE ON HIS TOUR. FOR THIS REASON I NEVER DOUBTED HIS STORY BUT I SEE NO MENTION OF HIS SERVICE TIME SO NOW I BEGIN TO WONDER. CAN ANYONE VERIFY IF THIS IS THE SAME PERSON OR NOT.

Tim,
I really can't answer your question.
Hope someone else can.
I searched the net for some info but found nothing to answer your question.

Maybe your only chance is to ask his widow Sonja Reuter (see above).
She can be reached by the legacy guestbook mentioned above.

From www.johnnyandthehurricanes.com, the desk of: Duane Thomas, Website Administer, Lead Guitarist, Johnny and The Hurricanes.
I can assure you, Johnny was never in the military and never served in Viet Nam. He continued performing till the age of 65 in 2005. Please visit our website, and we welcome any and all comments. I will always respond personally to all questions and comments. Thanks to all his fans and friends around the world for keeping his music alive.
Yours in Music, Duane Thomas, Lead Guitar www.johnnyandthehurricanes.com or c/o hurricane.duane@atilarecords.com

Duane, maybe a little late but I still want to thank you for your comment !
Everyone, please visit his website !!

At the moment of this writing it was over a year ago when Johnny Paris died.
Read at Sonja Reuter's guestbook a few weeks ago she placed some roses at his grave.
To us very nice, to her a loving memory.

What ever happened to a simple please?
threats just piss me off even more.......i would have posted every single item ever recorded anywhere on earth by Johnny & The Hurricanes just out of spite

I hesitated to publish the above comment, but today I did.

It seems I am a different guy.
At that time I did a little research about Sonja Reuter and I understood who she was.
She just lost her husband and I can imagine her feelings about a lot of things.

So I respected her wish. To me quite simple.
Maybe she thinks different now, I don't know.
For the time being I stick with my 2006_june/july decision.

I've never been an advocate of piracy. However, when Napster first came online several years ago, I was able to listen to music that I had heard as a child (a few decades ago). I am sorry that it wasn't possible to have one selection on your site. I don't know if I have ever heard of Johnny and the Hurricanes. Words describing music is like trying to catch teardrops in the wind. Perhaps it is as well to have never heard the music.

I never heard of Johnny and The Hurricanes, until I read it here on this blog, and that probably goes for a zillion other kids my age. lol. I look fwd to hearing more of his stuff in the future. Peace, Eric.

@Anonymous and @Katoikei.
You will not be disappointed if you lay hands on a (compilation) album of J&H. It's great music !

People who get nasty about copyright need to grow up. A blogger can WRITE about the artist. What do you think magazines have done for 100 years? A critic writes about a film or a record, and you buy. Or not.

Maybe one song is not too bad. But a whole album? Then there is nothing to buy. Which is fine if you are a Communist, but Capitalism is about buying...and respecting somebody else's rights.

And no, busy artists, their agents or their widows need not ask "please" when it involves theft.

wonder why his 'widow' Sonja Reuter did NOT go by her 'married' (husbands') name,

Example.
Am I important because my father is a Nobel prize winner ?
If someone wants to be my friend with that in their mind.... Not a real friend.
My friend can only be my friend because of me and her/him.

I suppose it has something to do with her own stuff : dog breeding thing.
So I can understand her choice of (still) using her born name and even appreciate it.

Hello Again. Hurricane Duane form Johnny & The Hurricanes.

Sonja does in fact use her legal last name "PARIS". And one should realize all the worldwide misuses of illegally obtained tunes, it reaches into the thousands of dollars.

Some things will always belong to the owners of legally copyrighted material, books, songs, poetry.
And thats as it should be.
God Bless all...
