Soccer again !
It was a hot day friday. The predicted winner of this tournament (... the Dutch ...) started as expected by me and the other specialists. :-)
In their match against Ivory Coast they made a fantastic goal by Robin van Persie. The goalkeeper didn't see his free kick.

Later on Manchester United's 'Van the man' Ruud van Nistelrooij also scored.
Was it off side ? Certainly not as this frozen picture shows.
Then coach Marco van Basten told his group the rest of the match was just a training. He instructed the players to act as it was already the final with one goal ahead. So defend.
It should have been easy to score more goals but this was his decision.
So if you think the Dutch were under a great pressure during the second half of this match you're wrong : it was just a training.

Pfff, how did I sweat.... We were quite lucky !
Today Ghana did a great job against the Tsjechs (I believe ...). They simply have to win their nexy match to go on.
Also the US got a very deserved draw against Italy (should have been more I understand).
It'll be an interesting third round.

is that true about marco VB saying pretend its the final and you are 1 nil up? if it is - fantastic!
or perhaps its a little distortion of the facts....
anyway after tonights non match against argentina, netherlands should have plent of energy for the real matches to come.
i hope they do the business but only if they play 'total football' in the grand tradition. good luck!

i know the pain must be very big right now but jean can you please explain...
why is it that whenever netherlands are on the brink of doing something special they manufacture a disaster? (1988 excepted)
why cant the players get along?
sigh.. as a long time admirer of dutch football tonight was very difficult to watch. i live in hope for a day when the team in orange pull together and do it!
hard luck mate

Azfad I answered your questions also a little bit in the Blog.
We don't have to take it too serious !
..Marco saying 1 nil up.. was just joking myself.
But I DID hear him say after the match against Argentine when he was interviewed along with our Prince William (married to Argentine Maxima) he told the players to keep it 0-0 to avoid problems in the Royal family !!
..Portugal lost match.. I feel no pain. Football is nice, but there are more important things in the world.
..Manufact disaster.. We THINK we're so damned good but in fact we aren't (personal opinion). At this level ALL (ok, most) teams are (quite) good. Now only four left. Three will go home crying, only one will have the great party !
Although I also wrote about the 'winning team Holland' it is just fun, as was the 2 years of qualifying matches. We had great 'orange' party's in Holland the last weeks. Was great fun, but now we all have to go back to normal .. !
