Tom Schulte from All Music Guide wrote about this album.
Louis Prima, a trumpeting, band-leading apostle of King Oliver and Louis Armstrong, comes across as the entertaining extrovert in the wildly expressive tradition of Al Jolson. This collection is from Prima's post-WW II nightclub period, when he had fully developed a Louis Armstrong presentation of novelty playing with a solid swing and jazz backing band. Wife Keely Smith figures prominently as a backing vocalist, and that on-it band is Sam Butera and the Witnesses. This places these songs in the late '50s, after tenor saxophonist and bandleader Butera joined and before Prima's divorce from Smith. These are the Las Vegas days and the arrangements are calculated to give the audience the expected Italian dialect and swing band tricks.
I will leave in about an hour to fly to Switzerland again to attend the match Holland - Russia. It is real fun to watch the orange coloured people (today in Basel) having a great party...
So check the comments tomorrow (sunday) for additional info....

Louis Prima & Gia Maione fly with Mary Poppins
Singer-trumpeter Louis Prima was one of the first, cutting versions of A Spoonful of Sugar and Stay Awake before executives from the Buena Vista label (owned by Disney) suggested he record enough additional material for a full album. The LP is very brief (27 minutes), Prima only takes one trumpet solo on The Perfect Nanny and the ten numbers are essentially treated as novelties by Prima and his wife of the period Gia Maione. Only one number is longer than 2:41 but there is a cheerful warmth in the vocal interplay of Prima and Maione.
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is one of the well known songs (here also the Italian version).

Today 1910 Louis Prima was born
Today we remember the birthday of Louis Prima. You can check his biography at the original fan-site or Wikipedia. When Louis and his 'mate' Sam Butero returned to Los Angeles he came into a coma after he had a brain surgery in 1975 and died August 24, 1978 (aged 67).
On the right his grave at Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans. How true part of the lyrics of his great song Just a gigolo.
Since I first heard his Buona Sera I was a fan. Even collected his albums as a big band leader. Great stuff I can assure ya.
Was difficult to pick something for today. Again a compilation album ? You must have some I think. An album as a big band leader ? I suppose it's not the kind you may like......
So I did choose (again..) an not wel known album (with 12 songs never before released, and all of them recorded live). Their 1958 Live in Las Vegas album (there is also another one available with the same title but this one is different).
I admit it's not my own, picked this from Luizoak (sadly not available anymore at his Blog) but here you get a new chance. Don't waste it !
Quote from Luizoak (so thanks to Bigbadmusic / Anyswing).
I'd heard all of their studio albums but never understood the appeal of Louis and Keely until hearing this album. Louis is a maniac, hyperactive, out of control; Keely is composed, sophisticated, vocally magnificent. The contrast is the key. At times their humor is almost too close for comfort (they would divorce in 3 years): Keely mockingly refers to Louis as her "Italian Stallion," then says he's too old for her; Louis says, "That's a stage joke, folks": Keely, persistent, says, "No, it's not." And all this is inserted in the lyric of a Gershwin tune.
Louis demonstrates his musicianship, his New Orleans roots, and Louis Armstrong influence. And the act makes it clear that none of the neo-swing revival groups of the mid to late 90's could touch them.
And how right Luizoak is !!! Sadly his rip isn't perfect and even the last closing track is missing but who cares ??? This is a must have album in your collection to understand something about Louis Prima.

Gia Maione & Louis Prima
On the chat (where we live discuss the program) there was a question who this lady might be. No problem to tell.
Louigi Prima was first married to Keely Smith. Go back a few days on my Blog to get some info about Keely and to watch her great way of entertainment in the show.
They divorced and Gia Maione first was Louis' new girlfriend, later married him and at last became his widow.
Here's a Dailymotion clip of Gia taken from an interview how she looked back at that time. It's really worth to watch I promise ya.

On this day 1932 : Keely Smith birthday
EDIT 2007_07_01
Sadly all these nice vid's have been removed. You'll have to do with just my text.
On a local forum a few months ago I saw a videoclip by Louis Prima.
Some of the members, who claim to have great historical music knowledge, asked who that stupid looking/acting lady was beside Louis Prima.......
Well of course that lady was (at that moment) his wife Keely Smith. A woman with a very nice jazzy voice who celebrates today her 75th birthday.
It was just making fun, part of the show. Prima was famous for his riotous stage presence, what Keely Smith called "that charisma … that little boy thing" that had him mugging for the camera, mock-dueling with his band members, and generally bouncing off the walls. Smith was an ideal foil to this hyper-hepcat, a chanteuse whose smoldering stare and look of mock-contempt threw Prima’s antics into joyous high relief.
The first clip gives you a fine slide show wilst the second shows her nice voice.
Here's Louis Prima as a Grammy winner in 1959. I believe they complained on this one of Keely's behaviour. But it's all part of the show as you can see in the other clip.
Watch the great performance by Sam Butera (and the joking by Louis !!).
Ahhh, this was (and is ...) great music !
Nice video's aren't they ?
Take a quick look in the comments to find out more about Keely (ánd Louis ánd Sam ánd the Witnesses) !!
I promise you superb 'classics' like That old black magic & I've Got You Under My Skin and many more like their medley's Should I-I can't Believe That You're In Love With Me & Embracable You-I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good.
