Dave Clark Five's Weekend In London

Mike Smith of Sixties group The Dave Clark Five has died aged 64, it has been announced. He died from pneumonia at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, agent Margo Lewis said.
Smith, the band's lead singer and keyboardist, was admitted to the hospital's intensive care unit on Wednesday with a chest infection.
He had been in hospital since September 2003 following a spinal cord injury that left him a tetraplegic. He was released in December when he moved to a specially-prepared home near the hospital with his wife.
He had been preparing to travel to New York to be inducted into the American Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame with his band mates on March 10.
Ms Lewis said last night: "These last five years were extremely difficult for Mike.
"I am incredibly saddened to lose him, his energy and his humour, but I am comforted by the fact that he had the chance to spend his final months and days at home with his loving wife, Charlie, whom he adored, instead of in the hospital, and that he was able to attend a recent concert in London by his good friend, Bruce Springsteen.
"He was extremely excited and honoured to have been inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame and I am glad that he will be remembered as a 'Hall of Famer', because he was in so many ways."

The Dave Clark Five were second only to the Beatles in the "Great British Invasion" of the US. The band sold over 100 million records and enjoyed 30 hit singles worldwide. They topped the chart with Glad All Over in 1963 and recorded a total of 23 albums, many of them for the US market.
The Dave Clark Five broke up in the 1970s.

Today 1928 Fats Domino was born

Antoine Dominique "Fats" Domino was born 1928_February_26. He is a classic R&B and rock and roll pianist and singer-songwriter and (according to Joel Whitburn's Billboard books) was the best selling R&B artist of the 1950s.

When Hurricane Katrina was approaching New Orleans in August 2005 Fats didn't wanted to be evacuted. Someone thought Fats was dead, and spray-painted a message on his home, "RIP Fats. You will be missed", which was shown in news photos. The rumour was spread widely.
Gladly Fats was saved by a coast guard helicopter. And so he is celebrating today his 80th birtday. Happy birthday mr 'fat man'.

Scorpions (UK) greatest hits and more

Saturday I wrote about Doris Troy and her selfpenned Just one look. That song strangely enough remembered me to the UK longhaired Scorpions.
My mother, who was born today 1922_feb_19, fiercely opposed the Beatles. Terrible with that long hair.... Well I liked the Rolling Stones so obvious I got even more problems at home. When I got home with a Scorpions single and my mom saw the sleeve I had a real problem. Maybe you experienced the same. Later on my mom said she liked Yesterday and As tears go by but that was as far as she could go....

Here's Scorpions - Greatest hits including that nice song Just one look.
01-Hello Josephine
02-Johnny B Goode
03-Keep-a-knocking
04-Some other guy
05-Just one look
06-Just like me
07-Ann-Louise
08-Bye bye Johnny
09-Rip it up
10-What did I say
11-Not fade away
12-Baby back now

Bonus
13-Stand by me
14-Under the boardwalk

I added these two songs as a bonus. I'm wondering if you would call these as Popcorn....

Elvis Presley's Studio B Nashville Outtakes

Every monday evening W is 'on air' with two great hrs of just Elvis songs.
The so well known hits of course but I prefer outtakes. They're mostly so refreshing. Not finished, raw, with mistakes or even totally different versions. Lemmie give ya an example.
The early sixties is one of producer Ernst Jørgensen's favorite periods in Presley's career, and for good reason they prove Elvis a consummate professional, where the outtakes are nearly better than the master selections. The famed studio itself sounds tremendous, Presley and the peerless Nashville studio pros are usually in good spirits, and Elvis' vocals are absolutely superb -- powerful yet supple, soft but dynamic, as per the song being rendered.

Elvis Presley's Studio B Nashville Outtakes 1961_1964
01-Kiss Me Quick _take 1
02-That's Someone You Never Forget _take 5
03-I'm Yours _take 4
04-His Latest Flame _takes rehearsal & 2

06-For The Millionth And The Last Time _take 1
07-Anything That's Part Of You _takes 4,5
08-I Met Her Today _takes 8-9
09-Something Blue _takes 3,4
10-Gonna Get Back Home Somehow _take 1

Today 2004 Doris Troy died

Doris Troy (born 6 January 1937 and died 16 February 2004 from emphysema at her home in Las Vegas, Nevada) was an American R&B singer, known to her many fans as "Mama Soul."
She was born Doris Payne in The Bronx, the daughter of a Barbadian Pentecostal minister. Her parents disapproved of "subversive" forms of music like rhythm & blues, so she cut her teeth singing in her father's choir. She was working as an usherette at the Apollo where she was discovered by the 'Godfather of Soul', James Brown.
Doris Troy worked with Solomon Burke, The Drifters, Cissy Houston and Dionne Warwick before she co-wrote and recorded Just One Look which hit #10 in 1963. The song has been covered by The Hollies, Linda Ronstadt, Bryan Ferry and Harry Nilsson, among others.

Today 1981 Mike Bloomfield died

Michael Bernard Bloomfield was born July 28, 1943, Chicago, Illinois and died February 15, 1981, San Francisco, California.
Search Google for the Butterfield Band or the Electric Flag and Al Kooper as examples of bands Mike Bloomfield was involved in.

The album Super Session grew out of a single nine hour jam in 1968 by guitarist Mike Bloomfield and multi-instrumentalist Al Kooper and Stephen Stills of CSNY fame. Kooper and Bloomfield had both previously worked in support of Bob Dylan, in concert and appearing on his ground-breaking classic, Highway 61 Revisited.

Today 2005 Youtube was launched

YouTube is a video sharing website where users can upload, view and share video clips.
YouTube was created in mid-February 2005 by three former PayPal employees. The San Bruno-based service uses Adobe Flash technology to display a wide variety of video content, including movie clips, TV clips and music videos, as well as amateur content such as videoblogging and short original videos. In October 2006, Google Inc. announced that it had reached a deal to acquire the company for US$1.65 billion in Google stock. The deal closed on November 13, 2006.

Few statistics are publicly available regarding the number of videos on YouTube. However, in July 2006, the company revealed that more than 100 million videos were being watched every day, and 2.5 billion videos were watched in June 2006. 50,000 videos were being added per day in May 2006.

On the right a videoclip on which Chuck Jackson sings at an Burt Bacharach special, 1965.
He performs the Burt Bacharach song Any day now, which later on became a huge hit by Elvis Presley.
But Chuck performed the original and in my opinion the best version !!
Note Burt Bacharach playing the organ himself !

One hardly can believe Youtube is just three years old today....

Boudleaux and Felice Bryant continued

Diadorius Boudleaux Bryant was born Shellman, Georgia, February 13, 1920.
Felice (Scaduto) Bryant was born Milwaukee, Wisconsin, August 7, 1925.
Boudleaux (pronounced Bood-Lo) Bryant died of cancer in Knoxville, Tennessee on June 25, 1987. Felice Bryant died on April 22, 2003 also of cancer. Both are resting on the third floor of the mausoleum at Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee.

Few songwriters have compiled a catalog to rival that of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, who scored in both country and rock music.
Their first hit was Country Boy, a hit for little Jimmy Dickens in 1949. In the early '50s they wrote for many of the top country acts, including Carl Smith and Eddy Arnold. By 1957, the Bryants were writing for country-influenced rockers the Everly Brothers. Together the husband and wife team wrote such classics as Bye Bye Love, Wake Up Little Susie, Problems, Poor Jenny, Take A Message to Mary, Brand New Heartache and Sleepless Nights. On his own, Boudleaux Bryant penned All I Have to Do Is Dream, Bird Dog, Devoted to You and Love Hurts.
The songs of the Bryants obviously made an impression on the Byrds. Dillard & Clark recorded Rocky Top, and Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris cut three of their songs: Sleepless Nights, Brand New Heartache and, most memorably, Love Hurts.
One of the Bryants’ best-known songs is Rocky Top which they wrote in only ten minutes in 1967. First popularized by the Osborne Brothers in 1968, Rocky Top is now known as one of the seven official Tennessee state songs and the unofficial fight song for the University of Tennessee’s athletic teams.

Among the Bryants' many industry honors are membership in the Country Music Hall of Fame (1991), the National Academy of Popular Music Songwriters Hall of Fame (1986) and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1972). Affiliated with performing rights organization BMI throughout their careers, Felice & Boudleaux Bryant earned a total of 59 BMI Pop, Country and R&B Awards.

Today 1920 Boudleaux Bryant was born

Boudleaux Bryant, American songwriter was born this day.
Have to gather songs written by him and his wife Felice from various artists and albums.
So this is just a preview posted tuesday evening. Just wonder at this very moment how many of you know about him and his music.....
Don't do a Google search now : just out of head !
>>>
On wednesday evening, just before midnight, I finished this article.
Well, check Wikipedia, Rockabilly Hall of Fame, songwritershalloffame (please don't forget to click the discography button !) and/or do a Google search.
During their distinguished career, the Bryants had some 1,500 songs recorded by more than 400 artists, amounting to sales of over 250 million records........ So they were not the least in music.....
Boudleaux and Felice Bryant were among the first in Nashville to make a full-time career of songwriting. More importantly, they wrote some of the most enduring songs of the 1950s and 1960s, including many of the Everly Brothers’ best-known hits.

I decided to honour them in today's and tomorrow's posting ! I'm certain you will know most of these songs, but probably not in these particular versions... !!

The greatest Johnny Otis Show 1957_1959

One of the granddaddies of rhythm & blues, Johnny Otis led a West Coast big band that launched numerous careers (including those of Etta James and Esther Phillips). Otis' band wasn't just a launchpad for others, however. Johnny Otis scored big with Harlem Nocturne in 1945, then left his indelible imprint on the world of bar bands by writing Willie and the Hand Jive.
Johnny Otis' contributions include the introducing of some of rock's earliest pioneers to the public (including Jackie Wilson) and his live shows have been credited with giving rock its performance roots.
I somehow felt I couldn't get around Johnny Otis ah great live shows with those famous voices like Marci Lee and Marie Adams after yesterday's Gene Vincent. If you like simplicity, rhythm and blues, then listen to this album and enjoy the early sounds of great rock n' roll.

Elsewhere on my Blog you'll find nice albums by Little Esther Phillips & Etta James. But today we (..??) will visit the greatest Johnny Otis Show 1957_1959.

Today 1966 Sophie Tucker died

Sophie Tucker (January 13, 1884–February 9, 1966) was a singer and comedian, one of the most popular entertainers in America during the first third of the 20th century.
She was born Sonia Kalish to a Jewish family in Tsarist Russia. Her family emigrated to the United States when she was an infant, and settled in Hartford, Connecticut. The family changed its name to Abuza, and her parents opened a restaurant.

1990 Event of the day

To me an important day in 1990. The Central Committee of the Soviet Communist Party agrees to give up its monopoly of power : collapse of the Soviet Union.

Buddy Holly's posthumous last LP

Buddy Holly's posthumous last LP is called The Buddy Holly Story 1959.
This 12-track compilation album was rushed out within weeks of Buddy Holly's death.
It combines what previously had been credited as Crickets group-titles and Buddy Holly solo recordings, containing all eight of Holly and the Crickets' Top 40 hits, 1957-1959: That'll Be The Day, Peggy Sue, Oh, Boy!, Maybe Baby, Rave On, Think It Over, Early In The Morning, and It Doesn't Matter Anymore, plus the chart entries Heartbeat and Raining In My Heart and the classics Everyday and It's So Easy.
There is more great Buddy Holly, of course, but this is an excellent single-LP compilation.
Check the comments to get these nice stero-versions.

Buddy Holly's end at Clear Lake 1959_feb_03

Today is a sad day on which we remember that plane crash at Clear Lake in 1959 by which Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper (JP Richardson) and Ritchie Valens died.

Here's a small video filmed just hours after that plane crash.
Note the name Buddy Holley on his grave...

Read the complete story of what happened that day over here.
And you certainly will remember what Don McLean sang on his album American pie : the day the music died...!

Some Enchanted Popcorn on Laserradio tonight

This saturday it's again Popcorn evening.
Check LASER radio for this february's Popcorn programm called Some Enchanted Popcorn presented by Mr 'Mellow Popcorn' Theo Dumoulin.
Saturday at exactly 20hrs local_CET time (14hrs_CST time) Theo Dumoulin starts again. You can attend live if you JOIN us ! This way you get the internet stream directly in your Winamp or Mediaplayer.
You can also go to the LASER stream page and their Laser stream.

Sadly the playlist appeared on the Laser site just last night at 03 o'clock. After waking up this morning and doing my usual things I had too little time to make an alternate playlist (at the moment of writing it's almost 18 o'clock).

I have in stock another 20 songs almost ready and intended to post next week. Maybe I will post that today or tomorrow.
EDIT sunday : posted above.
