Cruisin' 1957 Joe Niagra WIBG, Philadelphia

This is the third in a small serie of Cruising records. You can get more info about this serie at the great Cruisin' blog. This isn't just nostalgia. It's history !

The sound comes thundering into your teenaged head and it's 1957 in "Wibbageland," the greater Philadelphia area within the broadcast range of Joe Niagara and WIBG Radio. On this volume of the CRUISIN' series Joe sells you a Muntz TV and a '57 Mercury...he ad libs a rhymed patter ("You heard the word/From this rockin' bird...")...he plays all your favorite teenaged hits. The words come tumbling from his lips in phrasing and originality that will influence a decade of disc jockeys, affecting a generation of listeners.
If you were growing up near Brotherlylovesville in the Fifties, you had someone worth emulating in Wibbageland, you had a friend at "Radio 99" - someone who talked to you confidentially, but with a sense of excitement. In every way, Joe Niagara seemed right for rock radio.
He had been born in South Philly (birthplace of Mario Lanza and Joey Bishop) and had come to WIBG in 1947 following service in the Panama Canal Zone and a year at another of Philadelphia's dozen or so radio stations. Between 1947 and 1957 he had the highest rating of any radio personalities in the city.
1957 was a year of accelerating excitement. The "cover" concept (whites singing songs originally recorded by blacks) was passe. Pacakage rock shows were racially mixed and packing houses everywhere. The 78 rpm record was dead. You held a fist-full of 45s now, hooking them over your thumb. And you hung knitted dice from the rear-view mirror of your chopped and lowered Forty-nine Ford. A radio announcer from upstate New York appeared in Philadelphia with a new idea in after-school television programming; he was called Dick Clark and it was called "American Bandstand." In October Little Richard threw $8,000 worth of jewelry into a river, said he was quitting show biz "to prove his faith in God," and enrolled in a seminary...and Elvis Presley got his draft notice. But it didn't seem to slow the rush. Things were, as Elvis himself shouted, All Shook Up.

Today 2004 Timi Yuro died

Rosemary Timotea Yuro (born 1940_August_04 in Chicago, Illinois and died 2004_March_30 in Las Vegas, Nevada) was an American soul and R&B singer. She is considered to be one of the first blue-eyed soul stylists of the rock era.

Richie Unterberger from All Music Guide wrote about Timy Yuro :
Known as "the little girl with the big voice," Timi Yuro's booming, resonant vocals were sometimes mistaken for being black, being a man's, or both. Her voice was indeed mammoth, and her delivery astonishingly mature, on her debut single, "Hurt." This 1961 version of the pop standard reached number four and was followed by a brief period of stardom in the early '60s. Too pop in orientation to be called a rock singer, too conscious of rock and soul trends to be pigeonholed into what was then called the adult market, Yuro's undoubted talents never fully jibed with her material. While there was soul in her voice, it was of the Dinah Washington or Nancy Wilson sort, with perhaps more of a bend for straight pop than pop/rock. Over the course of the few years following "Hurt," she actually found her greatest success on the easy listening charts, but also dabbled in girl group pop, R&B, Gene Pitney-like ballads, and Patsy Cline-like country. She scored several minor hits during this time, the biggest of which was the most soulful: "What's a Matter Baby (Is It Hurting You)"; reaching number 12 in the U.S., it was covered by the Small Faces a few years later as the B-side of their first single. Continuing to record throughout the '60s and into the '70s, she experienced little success after leaving the Liberty label in 1964. After a brief retirement in the late '70s, Yuro attempted a comeback in 1980. However a throat ailment was discovered that required surgery, forcing the singer to not only cancel her planned recording date, but also preventing her from singing - or even talking - for six months. She eventually did make a comeback, one not unlike other pop stars who spent brief reigns on the top of the charts - playing her hits to small pockets of grateful fans around the world. She continued to record too, releasing an album of Willie Nelson covers and a re-recording of her most popular songs, including "Hurt." Unfortunately problems with her throat again forced her to stop singing, but the prognosis this time was cancer. Yuro struggled, first with throat cancer in the '90s then inoperable brain cancer in the 00's, which effectively ended her singing career. Timi Yuro passed away in March of 2004.

Meet the Majors ft Ricky Cordo

When I visited a few months back Cologne (Köln as they say) in Germany I bought a nice compilation album by the Majors. Discovered I had more on various compilation albums. Visited SoulfulKindaMusic which gives a discography. So I learned I also had to search for the Premiers and the Versatiles.
Found out producer Jerry Ragovoy was involved with this group. Ragovoy also co-wrote Garnet Mimms' Cry Baby and produced later on Janis Joplin. And did you know he wrote under the pseudonym of Norman Meade that great Rolling Stones song Time is on my side (amongst others) ?? I like this kind of info.

I made a compilation Majors ft Ricky Cordo - Meet the Majors 1962
01-Versatiles - Passing By _1958
02-Versatiles (Sonny Day & The) - Half Moon _1958
03-Versatiles (Sonny Day & The) - Speedillac _1958
04-Versatiles - Lundee Dundee _1960
05-Versatiles - Whisper In Your Ear _1960

19-Majors - Laughing On The Outside, Crying On The Inside
20-Majors - You Ran Away With My Heart
21-Majors - Don't You Lose Your Cool
22-Majors - Lost In A City

If you check above SoulfulKindaMusic you will notice I miss some songs from their discography and ask for your help. If someone has the following please send them to me. Would be very grateful.
Premiers (members Robert Morris, Eugene Glass, Frank Troutt, Rick Cordo and Ron Gathers). I see quite a few mentioned in my DBase but don't know if that's this group. So would like to get some discography info.

Paul McCartney divorced : full judge ruling

Yesterday UK BBC News revealed At a glance : McCartney vs Mills ruling about the divorce of Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills.
Heather Mills had a "warped" sense of her four-year marriage to Sir Paul McCartney and proved her "own worst enemy" in her gold-digging claim to the ex-Beatle's fortune.
That's the scathing assessment of the British judge Sir Hugh Bennett who awarded Mills a € 30 million divorce settlement - far below the € 150 million she demanded.

Elsewhere I did read the following.
Heather Mills was "a less than impressive witness" whose evidence was "not just inconsistent and inaccurate but also less than candid", a High Court judge said in a ruling the ex-model did not want the world to see.
The full judgment of the divorce battle between Miss Mills and estranged husband Paul McCartney was released after her attempt to appeal against Mr Justice Bennett's decision to release it failed at the Court of Appeal.
The judge described Sir Paul McCartney's evidence as "balanced".
Mr Justice Bennett said Heather Mills was a "strong-willed and determined personality" who had shown great fortitude in overcoming her disability.
He said: "She has conducted her own case before me with a steely, yet courteous, determination." The judge described her as a "kindly person" who is "devoted to her charitable causes".
Of Sir Paul, he said: "He expressed himself moderately though at times with justifiable irritation, if not anger. He was consistent, accurate and honest."
However, Mr Justice Bennett said: "But I regret to have to say I cannot say the same about the wife's evidence.
"Having watched and listened to her give evidence, having studied the documents, and having given in her favour every allowance for the enormous strain she must have been under (and in conducting her own case), I am driven to the conclusion that much of her evidence, both written and oral, was not just inconsistent and inaccurate but also less than candid. Overall she was a less than impressive witness."
The judge said he could not accept Miss Mills' case that she was wealthy and independent by the time she met the former Beatle in the middle of 1999.
"I find that the wife's case as to her wealth in 1999 to be wholly exaggerated. The assertion that she was a wealthy person in 1999 is, of course, the first step in her overall case that her career, which in 1999 she says was one producing rich financial rewards, was thereafter blighted by the husband during their relationship."

Well divorcing is costly. It's always about (the...) money.
Does it has to be € 25.000, 100.000, 200.000 or more for normal people ? It never seems enough and it never seems possible to communicate in a 'normal' way about children or this material issue. So far my personal speaking...

The full ruling (a small 300kb Adobe document) of Mr Justice Sir Hugh Bennett can be found in the comment.

Cruisin' 1958 Jack Carney WIL, St Louis

cruisin' (krew'-zin) Teen-age custom of driving around, primarily to listen to pop music stations on the car radio, while observing other kids and cars doing the same thing; popular all over the United States beginning in the mid-fifties.

On 2007_November_08 I wrote an article about Cruisin' 1959 Hunter Hancock KGFJ, Los Angeles. You can get more info about this serie at the great Cruisin' blog. This isn't just nostalgia. It's history !

Today it's 1958 radio on the CRUISIN' series and in St. Louis it's the sound of Jack Carney, a man whose sense of humor made it seem he was trying to add a "D" to his station's call letters, WIL. That would have put him in Boston, on WILD, another of the several stations he worked in the Fifties; Jack was one of radio's gypsies before he settled down in Missouri. This was where he made his mark, concocting bizarre stunts that appealed to so many (mostly teenagers) his station went from number seven in the seven-station city to number one six weeks after he joined the staff. He invented a character called Pookie Snackenberg, who became a hero to St. Louis teens. He asked listeners to pull the tuning knobs off their home and car radios so the dial couldn't be moved from WIL - and weeks later irate parents still were digging through the three barrels of knobs Carney had received from their sons and daughters. He offered twenty dollars to anyone who showed up with a bird on his head (after playing a record called Bird On My Head) and there were fifty takers standing around with birds in half an hour. And when it was time for summer vacations to end he asked for fifty words or less - he said he'd settle for one - on "Why I am delighted to be returning to school," the winner to be driven by Carney to class and home each day for a week, in a limousine. Hokey. But Carney's presentation of "The Silver Dollar Survey" was one of the most influential programs on radio at the time.

Cruisin' 1958 Jack Carney WIL, St Louis.

Jack Carney resume:
WIL, KMOX St. Louis, WABC New York, KSFO San Francisco
Host, "The Comedy Show" (Syndication)
Jack Carney died in November, 1984 while taking a swimming lesson at a St. Louis YMCA. He was 52. His funeral was carried live on KMOX. He was posthumously inducted into the St. Louis Radio Hall of Fame.

SIDE ONE (18 minutes) starts with Jack Carney theme
At The Hop - Danny and Juniors & WIL Back to School contest
Tequila - Champs & 1958 Mercury commercial
Book of Love - Monotones & WIL Summertime jingle
Rock and Roll Music - Chuck Berry & Pookie Snackenberg Button Bit
Short Shorts - Royal Teens & WIL Station ID

SIDE TWO (18 minutes) continues with Chantilly Lace - Big Bopper & Gillette commercial
Rockin' Robin - Bobby Day & WIL jingle
Get A Job - Silhouettes & Gary Owens Show plug
Ten Commandments of Love - Harvey & Moonglows & 1958 Chevrolet commercial
Reber Rouser - Duane Eddy

Help Required - Technical Support

Lately I did somewhere read this cry for help.

18 months ago, I upgraded to GirlFriend 1.0 from DrinkingMates 4.2, which I had used for years without any trouble. However, there are apparently conflicts between these two products and the only solution was to try and run GirlFriend 1.0 with the sound turned off.
To make matters worse, GirlFriend 1.0 is incompatible with several other applications, such as LadsNightOut 3.1, Football 4.5, and Playboy 6.9.
Successive versions of GirlFriend proved no better. I tried a shareware programme, Slapper 2.1, but it had many bugs and left a virus in my system, forcing me to shut down completely for several weeks.
Eventually, I tried to run GirlFriend 1.2 and Girlfriend 1.0 at the same time, only to discover that when these two systems detected each other, they caused severe damage to my hard-drive.
I eventually upgraded to Fiancee 1.0, only to discover that this product soon had to be upgraded further to Wife 1.0.
While Wife 1.0 tends to use up all my available resources, it does come bundled with FreeSexPlus and Cleanhouse2008.
Shortly after this upgrade, however, I found that Wife 1.0 could be very unstable and costly to run. Any mistakes I made were automatically stored in Wife 1.0's memory and could not be deleted. They then resurfaced months later when I had forgotten about them.
Wife 1.0 also has an automatic Diary, Explorer and E-mail Filter, and can, without warning, launch TurboStrop and Whinge. These latter products have no help files, and I have to try to guess what the problem is.
Additional problems are that Wife 1.0 needs updating regularly, requiring ShoeShop Browser for new attachments and Hairstyle Express which needs to be reinstalled every other week. Wife 1.0 also spawns unwelcome junior processes that drain my resources. These conflict with some of the new games I wanted to try out, warning me that they are an illegal operation.
Also, when Wife 1.0 attaches itself to my Audi TT hard drive, it often crashes. Wife 1.0 also comes with an irritating pop-up called MotherInLaw, which can't be turned off.
Recently I've been tempted to install Mistress 2008, but there could be problems. A friend of mine has alerted me to the fact that if Wife 1.0 detects Mistress 2008, it tends to delete your home and all of your Money before uninstalling itself.
Any ideas?

Any help will be appreciated !

Ashley Alexandra Dupre & Eliot Spitzer : sex !!

Why not a littlebit sex on my Blog ? Today's hot news......
What's in a name : Ashley Alexandra Dupre & Eliot Spitzer...
It seems this morning you could get her songs for free from the net, but at the end of the day it did cost already 95 $cent.... I meant her songs, not her.... that'll cost ya a few thousand bucks... lol.

Ashley Alexandra Dupré is better known as Kristen, the escort whose rendezvous with Eliot Spitzer at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington on Feb. 13, 2008 led to his disgrace and sudden resignation as governor of New York almost a month later.
The details of the encounter were described in an affidavit filed in federal court along with charges against four people involved in running the escort service, Emperor's Club V.I.P.
A different picture of Ms. Dupré emerges from her MySpace page. She writes of her “odyssey to New York from New Jersey through North Carolina, Miami, D.C., Virginia and Austin, Texas;” public records show that she lived in Belmar, N.J., in 2001, and in North Carolina in 2003. She owns a company, created in 2005, called Pasche New York, which her lawyer said was an entertainment business designed to further her singing career.
In 2006, Ms. Dupré changed her legal name, according to records in Monmouth County Superior Court, from Ashley R. Youmans to Ashley Rae Maika DiPietro, taking her step-father’s surname. In an interview, she referred to herself as Ashley Alexandra Dupré.
The court documents included snippets of conversation, captured on a wiretap, between Ms. Dupré and someone at the escort service following the encounter with Mr. Spitzer. When the woman described complaints other escorts had voiced about Mr. Spitzer, Ms. Dupré responded: "I don't think he's difficult. I mean it's just kind of like, whatever, I'm here for a purpose. I know what my purpose is. I am not a … moron, you know what I mean."
On her MySpace page, Ms. Dupré described her love of music and her ambitions as a singer. In the interview, Ms. Dupré spoke nervously of the repercussions from her unwanted fame. "I just don't want to be thought of as a monster,''' she said.

Louis Prima & Gia Maione fly with Mary Poppins

The score of Mary Poppins was recorded by many singers and musicians after the movie's premiere in 1964, including Duke Ellington and John Coltrane (Chim Chim Cheree).
Singer-trumpeter Louis Prima was one of the first, cutting versions of A Spoonful of Sugar and Stay Awake before executives from the Buena Vista label (owned by Disney) suggested he record enough additional material for a full album. The LP is very brief (27 minutes), Prima only takes one trumpet solo on The Perfect Nanny and the ten numbers are essentially treated as novelties by Prima and his wife of the period Gia Maione. Only one number is longer than 2:41 but there is a cheerful warmth in the vocal interplay of Prima and Maione.
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is one of the well known songs (here also the Italian version).

To know him is to love him

Phil Spector wrote, inspired by the epitaph on Spector's father's tombstone, the lyrics to To know him is to love him and this song is best known by The Teddy Bears (in which he participated).
In my humble opinion the best version ever made is by those great female singers Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt.

On the left their Trio-album video clip and on the right a 1987 live version.
Watch in particular how good looking the ladies were, especially Emmylou Harris. Well, I'm a guy and no need to explain further....

Sweet Smoke Just a Poke

I don't know much about Sweet Smoke. AMG gives no info. I have only a few lines written down from the back sleeve few years back.
In short. It was a US (kinda jazz percussion) band who lived in Germany early 70's and toured in Europe. The band consisted of 5 musicians but helped by family members (the hippie/commune years) so there could be easily 10 people on stage.

Sweet Smoke - Just a Poke 1970
01-Baby Night
02-Silly Sally

Each side of this LP is just one track (17 minutes).
I like the second side best because of the drum/percussion solo : great ! If you like songs like Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Lucky man this is a 'must have' !
But side one is also interesting. This track consist of three parts. The second part (starts at 8.30 minutes) reveals a hidden (not noted on the back sleeve of this LP) cover of the Doors - The soft parade (see my Doors posting february_23).
If you find this interesting check the comments.

Tonight Laser Radio says Hello Popcorn

Tonight it's again Popcorn evening. Just checking the songs at this moment of writing (friday evening). It seems I have about half of the scheduled songs, not too bad.

So tonight there's on LASER radio already the third 2008 Popcorn programm called Hello Popcorn presented by Mr 'Mellow Popcorn' Theo Dumoulin.
Saturday at exactly 20hrs local_CET time (14hrs_CST time) Theo Dumoulin starts again. You can attend live if you JOIN us ! This way you get the internet stream directly in your Winamp or Mediaplayer.
You can also go to the LASER stream page and their Laser stream.

Here's my 'alternative' playlist of Theo's 2008_03_01 Hello Popcorn
01-Jerry Jackson - Se Habla Espanol
02-Chuck Jackson - Any Other Way
03-Pierre Lalonde - It's Gonna Be Cloudy

40-George Tindley - Just For Her

Please note.
NONE of the above songs are on Theo's playlist. You'll have to listen yourself.
Some songs can be called Popcorn but not all. But they're all 'my alternative songs'.

I did choose as a funny 'bonus' 31-Savannah Churchill - I Want to Be Loved (But Only by You) in it's original 1947 recording. Theo will play the 1950 version (and issued a second time in 1954) by Savannah Churchill with the Lynn Proctor Trio which is a great Popcorn version !

Two video-clips to end with. Left Jerry Jackson - Wide awake a in dream and

right Paul Anka - Piangerò per te, Ogni Volta, Io ho in mente te (7 minutes).

Go to the comments to get the songs of my 'alternative' playlist of Theo's 2008_03_01 Hello Popcorn.
