Today 1933 John Mayall celebrates his birthday
Mid sixties I played soccer/football in the first team of my club (when I was 15 or 16, so years earlier, I made my debut). I was left midfielder and had for years an average of two goals a match. Not bad I think.
After the match we always went to one of our houses, watched on TV the major soccer league, ordered Chips or Chinese food, played some silly games (mostly card games) and played records. Them years we liked the English white blues like Alexis Corner, Chicken Shack, Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall and so on. Very different styles I agree. We weren't so much into the 'beat-scene'.

In 1962 Delbert McClinton was touring as a member of Channel's band in Britain. On one of their shows, they were supported by a then-unknown Liverpool group, the Beatles, who had yet to cut their first record. John Lennon was smitten by McClinton's style of playing, and picked up some pointers that he put to use on the Beatles' very first single, Love Me Do. In fact, McClinton's influence can be easily detected in Lennon's harmonica playing on many early Beatles tracks from 1962 and 1963. Just compare Hey baby to their Love me do & Please please me (as example).

Emmylou Harris Songbird box set is great
I did listen to it already two times. Wonderful music and a wonderful compilation made by Emmy herself.
One has to make priorities and so today no article and offer of a different artist.
Also this box is way to new to offer (buy it) so you just have to do with my today's remarks.
An 8 minute video clip in which Emmylou herself introduces this box.

Today 1962 John F Kennedy was assassinated
Such an event is to me, even after 45 years, the assassination in 1963 of John F Kennedy (35th President of the US) in Dallas, Texas by (we all assume) Lee Harvey Oswald.
I was going home from the dance-hall in our town and we stopped at the fish markett. Suddenly I cursed in a bad way, something I don't do.
We all went our own way. When I came home I was told John F Kennedy was dead.
Is there more between heaven and earth ?
Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with the crime, but was murdered two days later by Jack Ruby before he could be put on trial. The Warren Commission concluded that Oswald had acted alone in killing the president; however, the House Select Committee on Assassinations declared in 1979 that there may have been a conspiracy. The entire subject remains controversial, with multiple theories about the assassination still being debated. The event proved to be a poignant moment in US history due to its impact on the nation and the ensuing political fallout. Many regard President Kennedy as an icon of American hopes and aspirations; he continues to rank highly in public opinion ratings of former US president.
I suppose you all will be informed today about this historical event.
To be short. To us (at the time) youngsters a dream came to an end. The dream came a little bit live again with Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy but you will remember how sad that ended too.
Check also my article 2007_May_29 (the day Kennedy was born).

Today 1940 Dr John the Nighttripper was born
Dr John is the stage name of Malcolm John Rebennack Jr, a colorful pianist, singer, and songwriter, whose music spans, and often combines, blues, boogie woogie, and rock and roll. Rebennack gained fame beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s, with music that combined New Orleans-style rhythm and blues with psychedelic rock and stage shows that bordered on voodoo religious ceremonies, including elaborate costumes and headdress. For a time he was billed as Doctor John, The Night Tripper. The name 'Dr John' came from a legendary Louisiana voodoo practitioner from the start of the 19th century.
In the sixties I lived a short while in a kinda commune on the country side where the others also played psych music. I'm not so much into that but I like Dr John's 1968 debut album a lot.

Recently I found another version of A quiet place with a totally different title (and artist... will not reveal now....). A great one. Maybe it will be aired in the future in Theo Dumoulin's radio show you can listen to every first saturday of the month.
In the text file you can also read something about producer Jerry Ragovoy who was responsible for Garnet Mimms' as well as for Janis Joplin's version of Cry baby. His best-known composition Time Is on My Side (written under the pseudonym of Norman Meade) was made famous by the the Rolling Stones, although it had been recorded earlier by Kai Winding and Irma Thomas.
He's also responsible for the Popcorn song I Can't Wait Until I See My Baby's Face by Baby 'Justine' Washington.
Always interesting to know these kind of details don't you agree ? Ahhhh, you simply can check for instance AllMusicGuide or Wikipedia !
If you don't think this is interesting please never, never come back to me.........

Today 1990 The World Wide Web began
Wikipedia has some interesting background info about the history of the Internet.
The underlying ideas of the Web can be traced as far back as 1980, when, at CERN in Switzerland, Tim Berners-Lee built ENQUIRE (referring to Enquire Within Upon Everything, a book he recalled from his youth). While it was rather different from the system in use today, it contained many of the same core ideas (and even some of the ideas of Berners-Lee's next project after the World Wide Web, the Semantic Web).
In March 1989, Tim Berners-Lee wrote a proposal, which referenced ENQUIRE and described a more elaborate information management system. With help from Robert Cailliau, he published a more formal proposal for the World Wide Web on November 12, 1990.
Just like a telephone it looks nowadays so simple.. Click and you are where you wanna be. But it was in the last 17 years quite a proces/development to get you coming to me by the Internet by simply following a hypertext link to my Blog-page (not even typing the underlaying IP adress...).
Just some interesting historical info...

Holy Day Bahá'í Faith : Birth of Bahá'u'lláh
The Birth of Bahá'u'lláh is one of nine holy days in the Bahá'í calendar that is celebrated by Bahá'ís and during which work is suspended. The holy day celebrates the birth of Bahá'u'lláh, the founder of the Bahá'í Faith.
Faith of Bahá'í.
The Bahá'í Faith is a religion founded by Bahá'u'lláh in 19th-century Persia, emphasizing the spiritual unity of all humankind. There are around six million Bahá'ís in more than 200 countries and territories around the world.
According to Bahá'í teachings, religious history has unfolded through a series of God's messengers who brought teachings suited for the capacity of the people at their time, and whose fundamental purpose is the same.
Bahá'u'lláh is regarded as the most recent, but not final, in a line of messengers that includes Abraham, Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad and others. Bahá'u'lláh's claim to fulfill the eschatological promises of previous scriptures coincides with his mission to establish a firm basis for unity throughout the world, and inaugurate an age of peace and justice, which Bahá'ís expect will inevitably arise.
Bahá'í can be an adjective referring to the Bahá'í Faith, or used as a term for a follower of Bahá'u'lláh. (Bahá'í is not a noun meaning the religion as a whole.) The word comes from the Arabic word Bahá’ (بهاء), meaning "glory" or "splendour".
Three core principles of Bahá'ís teachings are often referred to simply as follows: the unity of God, the unity of religion, and the unity of mankind. Many Bahá'í beliefs and practices are rooted in these priorities; but taken alone these would be an over-simplification of Bahá'í teachings !
The Bahá'í religion was listed in The Britannica Book of the Year (1992–present) as the second most widespread of the world's independent religions in terms of the number of countries represented. Britannica claims that it is established in 247 countries and territories; represents over 2,100 ethnic, racial, and tribal groups; has scriptures translated into over 800 languages; and has seven million adherents worldwide [2005].
In minority one chooses later on his own Religion/thought. Mostly, one's Religion is that of your parents. Be aware of that when one claims 'I have the only true Believe'). Is it really a choice you made yourself or just following your parents ?
So, although I was born as and still consider myself Roman Catholic I am glad I learned a lot about Bahai in the sixties. Still have a lot of books so I looked into some of them today.
Just wanted you to inform. Please check the above Wikipedia links and read... When we approach each other more as equal and be a little bit more tolerant the world would be far better of !
Today 1943 Brian Hyland was born
Today we also celebrate the birthday of Brian Hyland. Two of the many differences between Brian Hyland and yours truly is that I am retired and he isn't but that I can't sing and he surely can !
So here are some of my personal favorites of Brian Hyland.
01-Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Polka Dot Bikini
02-The Clickity Clack Song (Four Little Heels)
03-Lop-Sided, Over-Loaded (And It Wiggled When We Rode It)

14-Weil Du Die Puppe Bist (Summer Job)
15-Ginny, O Ginny (Ginny Come Lately)
16-Du Bist Mir Unvergesslich (I Should Be Getting Better)
He made so many nice songs I could easily make up a cd 3 or 4 but this is enough for ya.
Lop-Sided, Over-Loaded (And It Wiggled When We Rode It) and Baby face can be considered as Popcorn songs.
Note that So long Marianne is the famous Leonard Cohen song. It's a little 'out of order' here (it's from 1971 and rest is beginning sixties) but it is such a nice version I hád to add it.
As a kinda extra bonus there are two of his hits in German as well as their b-sides.
My personal compilation is to be continued in the comment.

Remember the Titans (movie 2000)
Based on the true story of the explosive events that took place in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971 when African-American football coach Herman Boone was hired to guide an integrated but racially polarized high school team--the T.C. Williams Titans. Angry, stubborn and a rigid taskmaster, Boone faces a cool reception from the team's players as well as an awkward relationship with assistant coach Bill Yoast, a local white man with seniority and a tradition of winning who was bypassed for the job. It's made clear that Bill has feelings of animosity for having to be an assistant under a black man. As the two men learn to overcome their ignorance and bigotry and realize that they have much in common (integrity, honor, and a strong work ethic) they work together to transfom a group of angry, unfocused players into a dynamic winning team of responsible young men. In the process, they also unite a divided community and ensure that Virginia will always "Remember the Titans."
My son said by this movie he understands a littlebit how it was for black people in them years. Told him some stories about Nat 'king' Cole, Billie Holiday ('Strange fruit' song) & Paul Robeson.
Just wanted to say I like this kind of movies with some underlaying thoughts.

Cruisin' 59 Hunter Hancock KGFJ, Los Angeles
I'm (one of) the proud owner of the complete great Cruisin' serie. Originally it was just a 7-LP serie but later new CD-issue's went from 1955 'till 1970.
Such a good idea at the time to produce this kind of LP radio shows instead of just compiling sample albums.
Released .. Title .......... Personality/Station and city
6/70 ....... CRUISIN' 56 .. Robin Seymour/WKMH Detroit
6/70 ....... CRUISIN' 57 .. Joe Niagara/WIBG Philadelphia
6/70 ....... CRUISIN' 58 .. Jack Carney/WIL St Louis
6/70 ....... CRUISIN' 59 .. Hunter Hancock/KGFJ Los Angeles
6/70 ....... CRUISIN' 60 .. Dick Biondi/WKBW Buffalo
6/70 ....... CRUISIN' 61 .. Arnie Ginsberg/WMEX Boston
6/70 ....... CRUISIN' 62 .. Russ Knight/KLIF Dallas
Each album is not just a collection of the top pop music of a particular year, but a total recreation by a top disk jockey (of that year) doing his original program over a major pop music station. That means actual commercials, promotional jingles, sound effects, newscast simulations and even record hop announcements in addition to the original records themselves.
I collected over a thousand of these kind of radio shows. So much fun to listen to the news of the sixties.... From my favorite off-shore radio station Veronica I have the last week complete (and even the last hour from the studio master).
cruisin' (krew'-zin) Teen-age custom of driving around, primarily to listen to pop music stations on the car radio, while observing other kids and cars doing the same thing; popular all over the United States beginning in the mid-fifties.
I suddenly have to think about a 2LP Everly Brothers compilation with 50 questions to boys and girls about them years.
What did you always carry in your wallet.... Right answer of course a condom....
You can get more info about this serie at the great Cruisin' blog.
This isn't just nostalgia. It's history !
I played some of these records a while ago and, just because on this sleeve you will notice of course the back of a Chevrolet Bel Air Impala, prepared this for ya.

EDIT 2007_nov_07
There seems to be a poll going around.....
Changed the article because there were today a lot of visitors searching for the title of the b-side of Elmo & Patsy - Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer.
EDIT 2007_dec_07
Don't know if the poll is still going round but it's time to give some (not all....) deeper background info about Elmo & Patsy.... ha ha.
Veterinarian Dr Elmo Shropshire and wife Patsy Trigg Shropshire enjoyed a "side" career as a comedy-bluegrass duo in California clubs before becomming annual holiday celebrities with their surprise hit record of 1984 Grandma Got Run-over by a Reindeer.
The couple had actually been pushing the single since 1979 before Epic Records picked up the single as a novelty number and the record went gold. Making millions for Elmo & Patsy and it's writer Randy Brooks.
Elmo & Patsy eventually made 4 albums together before their divorce, but never reaching the success of Grandma.... Dr Elmo continued his Veterianary practice until 1995.
Now in his 60s, Elmo has remarried and owns a large rural estate in California (which serves as home to about a dozen wild deer) established Laughing Stock Records and hosts his own Dr Elmo website and annual Christmastime radio show.
