Holiday defragmentation ... :-) Read this !

Holiday is meant to rest or at least to do something different. To refresh.
So I was permitted 2 weeks off duty. But my dear (remaining) assistent ordered me to still go to work for just one day, jan 2.

Just like your HD needs from time to time some maintaning, my brains need too.
Visitors who know who I am understand the reason behind this chosen picture : it has also a little bit to do about my work... :-)
Visitors who don't maybe have the wrong impression , I like that ... :-)

Blogging is a kind of addiction. I should stay far from it now to also refresh my mind about this.

Regular visitors have noticed I changed a lot about the looks of my BLog.
I really know nothing about HTML but by try/retry I manage to change it the way I want it.
On the left of the BLog better look for the links.
At first I placed over there (the links to) the original pictures. The BLog became unreadable but also very slow....
Now I understand how to manage the size of pictures over there instead of re-uploading the old post-pictures in a smaller way (and re-organizing the original post to keep the good lay-out)....
Today it took me a long time to change the background color. I didn't like the just plain white. Learned again something : to 'play' with the hexadecimal figures (green/blue/red), the effect to the readability and (most important) where to place it in the template... OK, not efficiant the way I'm doing.
Did change a lot more of the original Blogger template I did choose in the beginning. It's so much more fun than just posting albums.
Of course younger guys (with knowledge of HTML) will smile...... The main purpose is to keep my brains working (I admit doing it in at this moment an inefficient way). Ah, maybe in the near future I will read some books asbout this and will smile too the way I behaved today.

Off the record. I had my first 'computer' around 1980. Remember my friends and I burned the chips ourselves to get different 'kernals', to change the letters of the printer and so on.
Got a new job, got 'Symphony' (Spreadsheet/Database/Wordprocessor, nowadays called a 'suite' but at that time something completely new) to install on my new PC. Never had a real PC. But cracked it within a day ! Never forget the looks of the 'professional' administrator. How could a guy like me, with a completely different background, achieve this ?

Computering was and still is a nice hobby if you find a personal touch.
And that is NOT only DOWNLOADING !!

Anyway, I will go on changing the looks, it keeps this old man from the street...
And I sincerely hope, you my dear reader of this, will start your own BLog. Give your thoughts in the open. It is so much fun. And maybe I will add to my 'links' (as I myselve got some help first of may and now reached about 5000 visitors a month) ; shouldn't that be nice ??

Saddam Hussein has been executed

About 20 hours ago I recieved info he would be hanged quite soon.
Just read it has been done only a minor 15 minutes ago.

I will not say a lot about this.
Prepared this posting already a week ago.

Watched the UN invasion, lead by the US, in Iraq on CNN. Will not argue about the given reasons to do so.

Remember the last days of Rumanian President Nicolae Ceausescu.
Remember before that the fall of the German 'wall' and the tears I had in my eyes. I knew what was ahead of us but more important to the people 'behind the iron curtain'.
Aren't all those eastern Europeans glad/happier at this very moment, despite still economical problems ? They are free and can take their (and their children's) future in their own hands !

I deeply hope the Iraqi's will not enlarge their (religious) hate to each other but I hope the leaders on both sides will use their common sense to co-operate !
If so they are real 'leaders'. If not something will happen like in former Yugoslovakia (a country I wasn't involved or didn't knew at all).
A lot of pain, a lot losses of lives. And nowadays ? People try to live on together and succeed in this. So who benafits/advantage ? No one. Leaders are dead or wanted. People lost relatives/friends. And now they try to live a normal live.

The man on the street doesn't give really a damn if you are black/white or Christian/Moslim or European/Asian or educated/not or so.
Let me tell you, I know by long expirience (job but also 'my behavings' in the 70's) the so called 'others' aren't bad.

Whether or not you/anyone (in particular in that region) agree with this execution it is a great chance to establish peace in Iraq but, more important, in the whole middle east (always try to look at things in a more 'broader' way ...).
I did say quite a lot about this ........
What do you say ?

Bob Dylan's first recording ?

Harry Belafonte has always been to me the Calypso singer.
I do have his very nice Carnegie Hall concerts (with the great Odetta !) as well as some others.

In 1962 he made an album called Midnight special. Recording info : Webster Hall, New York City, New York, February 2, 1962.
Interesting about it is that on the title track Bob Dylan is playing mondharmonica.
It seems Belafonte and Dylan didn't quite get along well so after this song their co-operation was over.
In the same year Carolyn Hester issued a selftitled album wich was recorded a few month's earlier (1961 sept). On this one mister Bob Zimmerman plays on several tracks harp !
I have that album but I have to say it nicely, it's not my kind of 'my music'.
So this was Dylan's first professional recording but you can hardly recognize him.

On Midnight special however we can hear him as we all 'know' him !
I have here the almost complete session of this song (20 tracks). So Bob Dylan lovers have to get it !
Is there anyone who dare comment to it ?

Top 10, top 100, top 1000 and so on !!!

The end of the year. Time to reflect the last year.
Christmas is the moment to think about our 'moral' things.

But when Christmas is gone we quickly go on to the more 'normal' things. Aren't we simple people ?

In entertainment/music that's always the top 10 music numbers of the year.
In my country there's since over 5 years even a top2000 of all times !!!
People can vote (cost some dime's ...) and air playing started second Christmas day.
The list is every year almost the same as is expected and will be everywhere around our (little ....) globe ....

On a local radio music forum I meet people who are searching for ages for the real 'gems'. Mostly I wonder if it is a 'real gem' but ala, let it be ...
A few years ago there was a spontaneous idea to make an alternative top 25 or so.
There are simple rules.

Send in your personal top 10 of all times, but your choice may not be on that Top2000 list.
So the obvious Queen, Deep Purple, Beatles, Rolling Stones are left out.

Everyone gets the songs on a cd-r. Every year the songs added three years ago are left out, so the choice is always refreshing itself.

Now we can listen and have to vote (simple rules again like a particular artist 2 times at the most and maximum 3 votes on your own contribution).
This way we learn more about the fav songs/artists of the other members of the forum.
Every year our top list is a fantastic surprising list !

I must be one of the older guy's over there so I always add (more) 'recent' songs to it hoping they (the youngsters, although they consider themselves already quite old... :-) ) will know (at least the artist). Hope they will like my older song choice.
My real preference on the other hand is before, let's say, 1962 but I have to take their knowledge in memory.

If you look at this recent picture of Emmylou Harris and you're a guy you surely must fall in love with her (as I am). Isn't she still looking good ? Wish I am that good looking ... :-) But her music is what counts so she has to be on my list !

So here's my personal 2006 top10 I did send in !

46-Smith, Arthur ah Cracker Jacks - Guitar boogie _instrumental
59-Dion - I can't go on Rosalie
63-Clay, Cassius - Stand by me (single)
68-Foxx, Inez & Charlie - Medley Vaya con Dios_Fellows in Vietnam
70-Chapman, Michael - Polar bear fandango _instrumental
71-Delaney & Bonnie & friends (Eric Clapton) - Never ending song of love
71-Kottke, Leo - Jesu, Joy of Man's desiring _instrumental
73-Garfunkel, Art - I shall sing
76-Cooder, Ry - He'll have to go
87-Harris, Emmylou & Dolly Parton & Linda Ronstadt - To know him is to love him

When you already visited my BLog you found already some offered here. If not please search (again ?) !!

I suggest the 'newbies' to look in the comment for a Rapidshare link and info.

Christmas greatest tits

I hope I will not offend some (female ...) readers of my BLog but sometimes I get mail and have to laugh. Hope you will smile too with this sexy picture.

Christmas without snow

It's Christmas, but a Christmas without snow.
It does cost a little but when it's getting dark this gives a nice view in the country side. :-)

It's Christmas time !!

I wish everyone a merry Christmas.

My special personal Christmas wishes go to my dear children Machil and Irene who are the most important persons in my life !!

Ki Ho`alu Christmas !

The last Christmas album is dedicated to my son and daughter.
Maybe not their kind of music (Armin van Buuren or Byoncé ....) but they have to know this.

Great guitar playing (sometimes reminds me of Leo Kottke, so you know what to expect) and only a few vocal songs like Reverend Dennis Kamakahi's 'Christmas Memories'.

While chestnuts seldom roast on an open fire in the Islands, and Christmas is only white atop Mauna Kea, this holiday collection will warm hearts and so I wish you, people here an there and everywhere on this tiny little globe, a Hawaiian-style 'Mele Kalikimaka' (Merry Christmas) !!

Doo wop Christmas

I wanted to write today about to me some special 'Popcorn songs' but V-Rocket was way ahead of me. He must be younger compared to me and that's why he's faster ... :-)
Anyway I strongly suggest you to visit his site !

But simple change of plans brings me to a doo wop classical. In the music bible you get all the info about this.
How wonderful is 'White Christmas' sung by Bill Pinkney & Clyde McPhatter. Mud's (or is it another group ?) 'Lonely this Xmas' isn't ment for me but 'Just a Lonely Christmas' by the Moonglows is. What to say about the Falcons and their 'Can This Be Christmas' ? All great songs.

Hope you agree as you can check in the comments.

Jo Stafford dedicated to my mom

When my mon died over a year ago I didn't needed anything from her legacy. Only her handkerchief and now I 'carry' them both with me. So there isn't a day I'm not remembered to them.

She was too old to understand something like the internet.
She was a very precise woman (she also had to : we had a small bussiness). Never made any debts.
She organized the whole houskeeping as well as their bussiness.
Had a rough time (as had my father) during World war II. Life isn't easy when you're young and suppressed. I always think about this when I see all the violence in the world coming to us on TV. How can those children become 'normal' adults when they grow up with so much hate to other people ?
I owe my mother a lot.
What is she thinking about my BLogging ? Is she laughing upstairs ??

The first song I remember she liked very much was Jo Stafford's 'Thank you for calling'. It was played so many times at home.

Sadly I don't have her Christmas album (Jo Stafford - Joyful Season _1964). If someone has please, PLEASE, post it in the comments.
On the left is a sleeve I found on the internet.

But I do have a very nice album Jo Stafford & Gordon MacRae - The old rugged Cross from 1962 (see above). I've seen a CD (picture on the right) of that name but that is not my LP. It seems mine is a re-issue of their 1955 album 'Whispering hope' but I can't find any info about that nor any sleeves.
As a remembrance to my mom here's that gospel LP which fits so nicely in this time of the year.
Great songs like 'Whispering hope', 'It is no secret' and 'Rock of ages'.
Don't bother the crackles when you listen to it after you found the info in the comment.

Mario Lanza dedicated to my dad

Christmas time. Time to reflect the last year.
Did we achieve the things we wished for at the beginning ? Did we get a better job with more money ? Did we buy that new car ? That new house ?

I'm just happy with the handkerchief which belonged to my father, who died some 15 years ago, and I which always carry with me.
He was a simple man who was just plain happy with his family for which he worked so hard all his life. Christmas was always special to him. The whole family together joined around the Christmas tree. All happy faces. The stable with just born Jesus Christ. Going to church in the middle of the night. Old Christmas songs. Cold outside. Throwing snowballs.

He liked singers like Caruso, Al Jolson and Mario Lanza.
As a tribute to my dad I'll play today Mario Lanza - Christmas with Mario Lanza 1950_1958.
Nice crooner songs like 'Deck the Halls', 'O Come All Ye Faithful' and ' The Lord's Prayer'.
This album went straight on to #1 in the American album list on 22 december 1951, so exactly 55 years ago ! Can you image, time flies.

See the comments to know what I mean.

A Christmas carol ? No, a Star carol.

'Tennessee' Ernie Ford, the man so well know by hit songs like 'Sixteen Tons' and 'Shotgun Boogie' recorded also some gospel and even a Christmas album.

Here's his 1958 LP Star Carol. It contains the obvious 'crooner' songs from that era like 'Joy to the World' and 'Hark! The Herald Angels Sing'.

It's maybe difficult to find this LP at Amazon or E-Bay, I really don't know. But it's quite simple to find it on my BLog.
I wonder how many think they will like this 'classical' Christmas LP, so for those : a very happy listening !

Pauline : many, many thanks !

Today was a sad day.

First off all it's my birthday and when you're on the wrong side of life expectancy .... :-)

Secondly it was the last day Pauline was at the office. Remember when I hired her at our former employer. That lasted only 5 years : because of a reorganisation we had to leave. Started a bussiness of my own and (of course ...) Henny, Anja and Pauline came along.
After 20 years of loyal service Pauline left us today.
Tonight we had a farewell dinner and when she wants to know the time she will think of us ...
Pauline, it was a pleasure to have had you 'on board'. Thank you sooooo much !!

And 'my girls' : thank you again for that great music book !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Christmas is officially CANCELLED

As I wrote I went abroad for a few days. All things went well so came back one day earlier than expected.

On the night trip back there was a sudden shock with the plane. No info by the pilot. When landed my friend 'Crackpot' made this digital picture.

So sadly I have to inform you all : due to unforeseen circumstances
Christmas is officially CANCELLED !

Wish I was still a 'teen' with Paul & Paula

Just a few days and it is holiday time again for the youngsters. No schooldays. Staying late in bed. Parents making preparations for Christmas.

Remember the great 'Hey Paula hey Paul' which was a number-one pop hit by West Texans Ray Hildebrand (Joshua, TX) and Jill Jackson (Camry, TX).
'Hey Paula' sold nearly two-million copies early in 1963.

In the same year they made the Christmas album Holiday for teens.
You know where to find info about it :-)

Periodic table of the elements part 4 (dedicated)

I dedicate this last one to mrs Machteld M who (also) had some special interest in chemistry in the sixties.

Tom's studio recording again but this time 'karaoked' by Christy and Emily (they try to 'sing' .... uploaded by Christy herself 2006_nov_08).
Here's what they write themselves about this :
Elements by Tom Lehrer.
Attempted Mimicry by Emily [left] and Christy [right]
Notice that it was just attempted. This was not successful. But it was funny.
Sorry that we can't sing.
Oh, and Emily kind of just mumbles/hums through the part that she doesn't know or can't sing fast enough and Christy just sits there and stares at the lyrics.

Christy and Emily, I hope you pass your examination !!!
One of the best of this serie I think. More webcams should be used to do this. Sadly I don't have one.

I had really fun presenting you this little serie. It took me back to the early sixties again when life was less complicated compared to today.

Quitting this BLog ?

I have lived all my life for others.
A simple quote.
Went to the kindergarden. Worked since I was 14. Earned my own money to study.
Graduated university without a debt.
Wanted a job to see something of the world and with small/no responsability.
Got a job with great responsability.
Born as a penny but became a dime. But am I a dime ?
Worked for my wife and children. If I could have a meal was enough.
Started this BLog for personal use april 2306. Wanted to learn about this new thing.
Use a visitor counter since july 2006.
Have today over 40.000 visitors. Man, am I proud ! Wasn't my intention but never thought I could reach that number.
Always thought our (your !!) children were not 'deep thinking'. I mean superficial.
So have done this BLog almost 8 months.
As I said for personal use. My personal diary which you can read.
In my header I write discussing.
I write. Almost no response.

Posted 2 weeks ago the Paris Sisters. Just saw 75 downloads but only one 1 rsponse.
Are you elderly the same as the youngsters ? Take, take, take and give a damn to the rest. Selfish.

So I am more and more thinking about quitting my BLog at the end of this year.
Just my two cents.

Periodic table of the elements part 3

Do we have 'chemistry' together ?? :-)

This is a very nice cartoon flash animation.

But of course a real human being can do a better job !
So here's for ya Alfredo doing all the 112 elements (known at the time Tom Lehrer wrote this song) 'a capella'.

Just a question. Do you like this ?

Paul Anka - Songs I wish I'd written

If I had only one song written which Paul Anka has written I would be rich and could retire.... :-)
But even Paul had some personal fav's in the early sixties, songs he wished he'd written.

I can't compose, I can't sing but he could ! So he made this album. Very nice ones. I personally like Save the last dance very much.

If you also want to know what Paul's fav's were in those days you have to go through the whole procedure of downloading and Unrar. To do that you need the info in the comments.

Note : all these are in glorious stereo but taken from old vinyl (as usual) !!!!!! Still worth to get this 128KBits 35MB file.

Periodic table of the elements part 2

I found some more on Youtube which are worth to watch. So here we go again with this Tom Lehrer song !
BTW each clip is only 90 seconds so there's NO excuse NOT to watch !

A version with nice informative pic's.

This is a version with other nice pic's.

Requiem to Georgia Gibbs

Just now I learned Georgia Gibbs (Born Fredda Gibson) died last saturday in New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center because of leukemia.

She will be most remembered for outselling Etta James (with a cover of "The Wallflower" renamed "Dance with Me Henry") and LaVern Baker (on "Tweedle Dee").

Here (In the comments you can get the neccesary info) I present some other (early and lesser known) songs by her : Gibbs, Georgia - Red hot_Ballin' the jack 1951 (recording Date 1949_1952).

Periodic table of the elements part 1

On 15 sep 2006 I posted the song The elements by Tom Lehrer in a flash animation by US Dallas man Mike Stanfill. Look at Tom Lehrer

I found some more on Youtube which are worth to listen/look to.
So here we go !

This is (partially) Tom's live version.
I must have been quite crazy (or maybe still am) in the sixties because I knew this table of elements (with all the positive/negative info) also out of head... :-)

This is Tom Lehrer's studio recording.

There's antimony, arsenic, aluminum, selenium,
And hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and rhenium
And nickel, neodymium, neptunium, germanium,
And iron, americium, ruthenium, uranium,
Europium, zirconium, lutetium, vanadium
And lanthanum and osmium and astatine and radium
And gold, protactinium and indium and gallium (inhale)
And iodine and thorium and thulium and thallium

There's yttrium, ytterbium, actinium, rubidium,
And boron, gadolinium, niobium, iridium,
And strontium, and silicon, silver, and samarium,
And bismuth, bromine, lithium, beryllium, and barium

and so on as you all will remember the periodic table so well ..... plus the end :

These are the only ones of which the news has come to Hah-vard.
And there may be many others but they haven't been dis-cah-verd.

Some Christmas songs part 1 to UTL

Today I talked on the phone to one my bussiness suppliers. The director asked me for some Christmas songs to listen to by the employees (on the left you can see some). To be true I offered the songs and I had to use a lot of persuation ...
Over the last years I already gave her (yes, she, she ... a woman ... but a great one !) quite a few songs.

And because I'm a nice guy, as you all must know by now, I'm preparing tonight some extra special Christmas songs for her and her company (which is, by the way, the largest of it's kind in Utrecht).
The next two weeks they can listen to all kind of different X-mas songs (of course while they are working !!!!).

In the comments you too can see some examples. Of course there's Spike Jones ah City Slickers, David Seville ah Chipmunks, Tom Lehrer, Stan Freberg and Allan Sherman.

This company is situated quite close to my city's 'dark area' so I am thinking also about Tom Waits - Christmas card from a hooker in Minneanapolis' which I didn't included here. :-)
If you find it somewhere else, gittit ! If not, give a comment and I'll post it here later on. Worth to listen to.

I remember the good old days and how cute that director looked (that part of my brains still works quite well).
I got from a friend this little cartoon how she seems to look nowadays.

Helma, I hope you don't mind ... and you all at UTL will still like the music ! :-)
Have a merry Christmas and a very happy New Year.
JD.

Everyone has his/hers memories.
My little brother (little ... he's 55 now) liked to play the drums.
Every weekend he had to rebuild his drum set. Wouldn't it be nice if this was done automatically ?

I hope my little brother Paulus MM will like this and smile when he sees this.

Paris Sisters

The Paris Sisters bridged the gap separating the traditional vocal pop of the post-World War II era from the equally generation-defining girl group sound that emerged in the wake of rock & roll. By the 1961 release of their Phil Spector-produced breakthrough "I Love How You Love Me," the siblings were already longtime veterans of the music business. Albeth (the oldest), Sherrell (the middle child), and Priscilla Paris (the baby) were born and raised in San Francisco. Their mother, Faye, was the quintessential stage parent, a former opera singer who continued her career vicariously through her children.

When they finally resurfaced on Lester Sill's fledgling Gregmark label in 1961, the impresario insisted on a top-to-bottom overhaul of their approach, tapping up-and-coming producer Phil Spector to shepherd the transformation.
Spector relegated Albeth and Sherrell to the background, and while he turned the spotlight on Priscilla, he insisted she dial back her powerful voice to a dusky whisper.
While the Paris Sisters' Gregmark debut, "Be My Boy," earned little notice, the follow-up, "I Love How You Love Me," cracked the US Top Five, galvanized by Priscilla's intimate lead turn and Spector's atypically restrained production.

Best of the Paris Sisters is from this era. I included 'Dream lover' and a slower version of 'I love how you love me' as well.

Look in the comments.

El Pickup

On my humble BLog I write about the 'oldies music'. By this I don't mean the seventies or eighties. A lot will say the eighties are oldies but not to me.

I made this BLog just for personal fun. It keeps this 'younger elderly' off the street ..
I must be crazy but there are more people like that. Take for instance Rubén Loaisa from Spain. Must be a crazy guy living in Madrid, should move to Barcelona where the better soccer is played ... :-)

The guy must spend a lot of time behind his grammophone and PC to make such very nice compilations.
He just ended a 3 hours Frankie Lymon compilation.

Besides this topic Rubén has made some other fine ones.

If you like my BLog you certainly will also like his. So pay him a visit at Elpickup and enjoy his writings.
I've added his link on the left for your future convieniance.

Shocking Blue_Mariska Veres - Venus

I remember a vacation with my soccer friends in Spain early 70's. How we enjoyed girls, drugs and r'n'roll in Lloret del Mar.
In the discotheques great songs like CCR - Proud Mary were played but also Shocking Blue's Venus, written by Robbie van Leeuwen (gitarist on the left) and sung by that good looking Mariska Veres. When you look at this YouTube clip you'll understand why all the guys were in love with her. She was sooo cute.
But in life we don't keep our youth and Mariska sadly died last saturday of cancer.
Here's my memorie of her.

Hope you will remember her.

As usual tonight is Popcorn evening !

This saturday it's again mister 'mellow Popcorn' Theo Dumoulin with his show on Laser Radio.

My personal guess is this time the show is called Prisoner of love because prison is a man gets in when he falls in love .... :-)
On the other hand I have a little (anti female) joke.
What's wrong when a woman comes out of the kitchen into the living room ?
Answer : the chain is too short ... :-)
Sorry ladies.
Seriously, of course Theo called it this time after track 16-Emilhenco - Prisonnier de l'amour, a song I've never heard (of).
Or am I right after all ?

So this will be a surprise to me as is of course Theo's whole show.

Take a look at the playlist Prisoner of love. Nice songs like
03-Breedlove, Jimmy - I say hello
13-Day, Bobby - King's highway
17-Clark, Petula - Plaza de toros (The lonely bull)
23-Cleftones - Some kinda blue
35-Nicodemus & Mudies All Stars - Old veteran

A lot of those original old vinyl records are very rare and by so very expensive.
Lot of dj's (in those good old days) did put a sticker over the record to try to prevent them from stealing. So from time to time Theo discovers one about which no info can be found anymore.
Such songs seems to be
18-Unknown Artist - A very happy man eternally
20-Unknown Artist - Please Mr River keep on moving
I hope one of you old/new listeners have an answer.
So JOIN (just click this to attend live !) us at 20 hrs local time (when the Popcorn counter on the left goes to zero !) to have again some wonderful oldies to listen to.
If you know these songs please post your suggestion/answer in the comments.

When Theo's show stops at 22 hours local time stay tuned because Gudo Leuven has also some great tunes to listen to. You will not regret that !!

Track 16 on the playlist is miss Toni Fisher. Wasn't she the first one who made a so called 'phase' record ? Theo will tell all about that I assume.

Here I present you, amongst some others, three versions of her 59'er The big hurt. A rough cut demo, the original 45 master single and a re-issue with overdubbed echo ; all in true stereo.
Her 365 Disappointments (year 1963) is worth to listen to. But my favorite is West of the wall (with a very interesting story 'behind' it...).

Comments, comments, comments....
I placed one myself. Why don't you do it also if you look over there ?

EDIT Sunday.
Again the chat room proved it's quality !
While playing the song 18-Unknown Artist - A very happy man eternally the answer was given by Raoul, Werner and 'Cardiac Jos^' : 'Cords - To be loved' ! These guy's must have good brains (and know how to use them ..).
